I was starting to think that the Outlaw 1050 would be a good option for a pre/pro until I came across some info on their website today. The thing that originally attracted me to the Outlaw was it being a 6.1 receiver. Although I still have questions whether that makes it compatable with the new surround ex dvd movies or not(being that it uses 8 channels), the big question I now have is why there is only 6 inputs for future formats when it is a 7 channel receiver. Why not 7, or even 8? Am I missing the big picture here or is this just one reason why this receiver is so affordably priced?
6.1 is actually a misnomer for Surround EX because the rear center channel is not a discrete, separate channel, but it is matrixed from the L&R surrounds, like Pro Logic does with the front center channel. Therefore, DVD's that are DD Surround EX (like The Haunting), are still 5.1 mixes. As such, there is no need for 6.1 inputs to acommodate Surround EX or any interation after it.It would be nice to have 6.1 or 7.1 just to be more future proof, but I seriously doubt we'll get to that. People are having a hard enough time trying to get 5 speakers and a sub in their living room.
