Can you guys comment on whether this is crazy or not: combine a decent DVD player with an old fashioned projector(those that have 3 colour tubes and are ceiling mounted). I am mainly interrested in the highest picture quality rather than sound. What are other options that don't take too much space? Thanks!
As was said, we need more information. Right now, the only thing that can beat a high quality CRT (9") with a good scaler and a DVD player is a 100K DILA type unit used in a commercial operation. As was posted, even a more modest Sony 50 unit (7" tubes) with a good doubler will beat everything else for picture quality (compared with 1 chip DLP or LCD's) esp. on the "true black" aspect of movies. I had a 2 chip DLP that I loved but gave it up and never looked back with a Sony 70 series (8" tubes) CRT projector.Yes, you need professional installation and calibration.
Yes, it must be recalibrated every 4-6 months (if you don't mind some tweaking, you can do this yourself).
Yes, the tubes are really expensive to replace (about $1,200 or so once every 4-5 years depending on usage).
Yes, CRT's are big and obtrusive.
No, the picture can't be beaten. It all comes down to what sacrifice you wish to make in terms of space, finances, and convenience.
Like it or not, the ancient CRT is still the king of the hill (for now).
Thanks guys for your well taken points but what about the quality of projectors versus home theater rear projectors or flat tubes? Also, can this thing be connected at all to a DVD player? Finally, where can I get one? My local TV dealer pretends such thing doesn't exist in the modern home theater aera (and is below his stage anyways).
So...
go find a dealer who is up to the job. End of story
Well, it's tough to answer your questions without knowing what you have. For example, I can ceiling mount a Vidikron Vision 1, it has 3 tubes, and I can run a component video out from a DVD player, through a line quadrupler, and get SOTA video. Cost? Hmmm, about 75K. This will blow away any RPTV---if setup properly, and in a room that has controlled lighting.
Can you give a little more information to go on?
The little voices told me to stay at home and clean the guns today.
blows away any rear projection set for $8K street.
be prepared to make sure focus and alignment are in check. Projectors of this type can suffer from two types of concerns:1) the three color lenses do not all focus an image in the same plane or at the same spot on the screen. this results in three slightly disconnected color images
2) "keystoning" where instead of a square image on the projector screen, you see an odd shaped quadralateral.
hi,
you know, this is an asylum? Anyway, yes it's crazy, but that just means you're part of the crowd. Best space saver going is one of those plasma tv's. I am going to assume you can't afford that. Good projection units are not cheap either; and they need professional installation.
If you are referring to a really old projection unit, especially from the 70's, it probably would not be very good. If it's from the 90's it might be worth looking into. If you're serious about this, find a good installer (you'll need one anyway) and ask him about it.
Hopefully he can check it out for you, if it is worth considering.
Last week's EE times reported that Panasonic has a much improved plasma display with 3,000:1 contrast ratio - equivelent to that of a CRT display. Compare this with the 100-200:1 of LCD or 300:1 of DLP and you know why CRT is the best and plasma is getting interesting.
when I see it. At the moment, all I see is overpriced plasma junk being sold on hype and good aesthetics.
