I checked the archives and found info on HOW to calibrate your HT system. My question is WHY? Does it make a difference? Why does it make a difference? Please help. Thanks.
Yes, it makes a big difference. You have 5 speakers. Each pair may have a different sensitivity and you will be a different distances from the front versus the rear. You use the spl meter to adjust the output for each channel so that they are all the same at the listening position. You can't get very close by ear. When they're properly adjusted, the effects of planes flying around the room or whatever become completely seamless.
Where can I get one ??
Radio Shack has a decent meter for about $35.
I'd recommend the analog RS soumd level meter over the digital one. Also, a copy of Avia Guide to Home Theater DVD will make it all make sense.
