It seems it would be a good idea. I often make recordings from television and only watch them once, yet to use the tape again would mean a serious decrease in picture quality, and to use it again after that...um, no. The great editability of Minidisc would also be helpful in taking out commercials. And being digital, fast forwarding through them would also be much quicker. I can think of a number of more advantages that a Minidisc like format would have over the standard video cassette. Is there anything out there similar to what I am talking about? Or does anyone know of anything on the horizon? If not, I wonder why?
In a sense, the TIVO type of hard disk storage is getting at what you are asking about although it is hardly portable. It is, however, somewhat open to editing, and it is temporary as you suggested. I haven't taken the plunge on one of these but I'm somewhat tempted for the convenience.
