I believe the video output from your receiver can only be in the same format as your input selection (i.e., s-video for dvd and composite for vhs). If your TV monitor only has one video input, this will be a problem, as this one input can likely only be composite OR s-video, with s-video overriding the composite. If your TV has two video inputs (s-video and composite), you're fine. As Karl W. mentioned below, you can get a composite to s-video converter for your vcr to overcome the single input problem by keeping a consistent s-video signal. Of course, another option is to use the composite video output of your DVD player into your receiver as well as vhs and then use a single composite output to your TV....this will degrade your DVD video quality, however. By the way, I personally prefer having my video sources (DVD and VHS) connected directly to the TV (which has two video inputs) rather than through my pre-pro to keep fewer items in the path and reduce the number of cables required. Excuse my verbosity.
