I have noticed some progressive scan DVD players being marketed recently. Can anyone tell me whether I will notice the improvement and under what circumstances? Thanks.
...on what you connect it to. Presumably it connects to a TV capable of the 480p, otherwise it doesn't make sense. It is supposed to be superior, but it all depends on how well it is made. When comparing the two outputs (standard vs. progressive) connected to a great Toshiba HD TV, the standard output actually produces better picture. Probably because the line doubler inside the Toshiba is so damn good. The picture is sharper this way.
So it can go either way. However, if you are considering a new DVD machine, I would not buy one wthout a progressive output today.
The biggest gain that you get is a reduction in various interlacing artifacts. The picture will seem a bit sharper and you won't, for example, see the "jaggies" on vertical lines as there is motion across the screen. As was said, you need to have a projector/tv that can accept and use a progressive input (computer monitor as one example). It also depends on the quality of your scaler/doubler as well and the video set-up. I'm using a Faroudja 2200 with a Sony 8" crt projector and I tried a progressive player from a dealer for kicks and didn't see any real improvement over the Faroudja (maybe slight but I'm not convinced of it). However, going progressive is a LOT LESS expensive than buying a Faroudja -- I did this a year ago when progressive wasn't really talked about much.If you use a small tv set like a computer monitor you're just not going to get much improvement to notice I suspect.
If you look at the last 2-3 issues of Widescreen Review there are several articles on this topic that you might find helpful and I believe that Stereophile Guide to HT has reviews in the most recent issue of two progressive players.
They work only if the TV accepts the progressive input. Using one on a standard TV is a waste of time & money.
