...on what you connect it to. Presumably it connects to a TV capable of the 480p, otherwise it doesn't make sense.It is supposed to be superior, but it all depends on how well it is made. When comparing the two outputs (standard vs. progressive) connected to a great Toshiba HD TV, the standard output actually produces better picture. Probably because the line doubler inside the Toshiba is so damn good. The picture is sharper this way.
So it can go either way. However, if you are considering a new DVD machine, I would not buy one wthout a progressive output today.
