Greetings,
I'm considering buying either the Lexicon MC1 or the Theta Digital Casablance. Price wise there somewhat similiar. I've read where the Lexicon D/A converters are good, but the D/A converters on the Theta Digital are very good. If anybody has experience with either I'd like to hear from you. Thanks...
Gus,
I have owned different Lexicon audio processors over the years and now have the MC-1. I would have to say you should go and IN PERSON take a close look at both units. The MC-1 could indeed use balanced outs but as far as music goes it does just fine, IMHO. I have never used Theta, not because I don't care for them, but have never been to a dealer to have a actual demonstration or view the unit. At one time I was actually looking at an EAD unit, but the dealer really wasn't satisfied when doing the one on one comparision.
I do use the internal digital and it does very well on PCM,Dolby Digital and DTS. The video is greatly improved as compared to the DC-1 and DC-2. Hope this helps.carl
I have owned the lex mc1, for the price it is not worth it, no balanced inputs and very weak musicly, a good ht processer though, I now own a Krell hts, and the improvement is astounding, I can't comment on the theta as I have not heard it, good luck
I was going to post -- What about the Krell HTS... but it is too late. I had a Meridian 565/562V (still own it, just don't use it right now) and I changed to a Krell HTS and have had NO regrets. The HTS is very, very good on music and doesn't have any of the problems of the Lex equip (consistently rated as only ok on music). I have heard the casablanca quite a bit as well and it has additional flexibility that the HTS doesn't have (but no component video switching which the HTS DOES have). The one thing that HTS lacks is a 7 channel alternative that mc1 and casablanca have (and my meridian had). However, I simply do the EX format using the ADA standalone unit and this has proven very good for the few "EX" format discs out there. The HTS is also quite simple to use and set up and it is built like a tank. HIGHLY recommended if you are looking in this price range.
The HTS is truly the best Preamp/Processor available right now. It is not perfect by any means, but on 2 channel stereo music, there is no equal. As far as DTS and DD, it does what it is supposed to do with no frills. No logic 7 or circle surround but, how often you would use those features is dependent on the individual. I had the MC-1 and got rid of it after a week for the HTS. No balanced connections, Component video switching and all around poor on music. What choice did I have? The instruction manual on the Theta stuff is as thick as an encyclopedia, and while the owners claim it's no big deal, I didn't have the patience or the desire to read such a manual. Read my review in Audio Review on the Krell HTS, I am Eric Bee.
