I believe audio was recorded using frequency modulation, much the same as stereo TV signals, but with a higher bandwidth allowing better channel separation and frequency response. It was indeed analog though, and discs that didn't use CX noise reduction had an objectionable level of background hiss/noise. Specks and sparkles that can be seen on many discs also could be heard as well.
