Hi,I have been into HT for a while (nothing like those in Audio/Video Interiors) and started with an Onkyo Pro-Logic Amp. Have just upgraded to the Onkyo TX-DS777 which has Dolby Digital (AC3), DTS and is THX Select certified.
This receiver in my opinion is great value for money for what you get and has 5.1 channel inputs so you can add external decoder at a later date if there is a better one available than what's onboard. It also has 'pre-outs' which allow you to route signals for each channel from the Onkyo's pre-amp section to an external power amp(s) which satisfies your 'grow with me' approach. I did the exactly this, starting with my first receiver then adding Power Amps afterwards.Only one problem refering back to your post. I paid $1760 AUSTRALIAN Dollars (about 1050 US) HOWEVER, I have read posts in US sites that it can be had for as low as $685 US. So, if your budget could stretch slightly you could end up with one hell of a receiver.
You should listen first as you may not like the sound of it and I'm not familiar with your speakers so not sure of the match, mine are B&W.
Just some food for thought as I am by no means an expert, but have owned two Onkyo Receivers and found them to be excellent sounding and good value if you shop around. Beware though, I have heard of hum problems from US models so select carefully.
Good Luck.
