Hi!
I just joined this forum. From what I've been able to read, this Forum is great. I have the following humble home theater (remember I am just getting into this hobby):
1Toshiba (Cz36v51) 36" TV with PIP and Component video input
2Toshiba DVD with DTS decoding (SD3109)
3Kenwood HTB 503 with DTS and DR (Prologic) decoders
4just bought an Optical cable (AcousticResearch)
5 still have composite cables
I haven't even connected my equipment yet! I just bought it, but I am not sure what to do with the Video cable. Granted i won't be using composite nor S video. I wanna put the component video inputs to good use but I am not sure which cable is better or where to buy it. Here in my area I can get the Monster cable for $70 dollars and the Harmonic Tech. for $125 (both prices are for all 3 cables). Can someone tell me which is better for my money? Will I see any difference for a $45 price difference? I can also get some cheap one for $33.
Please help this rookie...thx all
Unless you have to have component cables because you can't stand the thought of using svhs (I'm the same way), just use your svhs connection as your component output is virtually indistinguishable from svhs on the TV you are using. If you had a big screen RPTV then you will see something. If you must though, Audioquest cables are a good value in quality cables if you are not interested in Monsters.
You might try getting ahold of an old issue of Widescreen Review (about a year ago, I think, but you'll have to search for it unless someone else remembers the issue) that reviewed video cables among other things. The long and short of it was that the monster cables came out very well compared with other, more expensive, brands. There is some suspicion by some people because the tester was Joel Kane who heads the ISF but also does a lot of consulting with Monster. Personally, I think that his integrity is high and the results are valid.Personally, I use the Monster 1000silver series component and I've had no complaints or problems with it. It is a bit more expensive than some others, but I think that the quality is very good. The Harmonic Tech. is also quite good as far as I'm concerned. Whatever you decide, don't skimp on the cable because it is really the bloodstream of the system.
I recently (a couple of weeks ago) went through the selection process for component video cables. I found that the Canare cables were the most bang for the buck. They are available with true 75 ohm RCA Canare termination that is said to improve signal strength relative to noise. I found that I could get some from Markertek video supply www.markertek.com) at a price of about $50 for a 6 ft. (three strand) cable and aabout $10 more for a 12 ft. length. This cable must be special ordered and custom fabricated because in the studio industry the connectors have been BNC and component video in consumer form is too new for the cable to be in the catalogue. The three strand canare cable is the v3-3c cable. Of course you may be able to get even better cable if you make your own 3 strand from individual cables. I believe that I read a string either on this forum or the cable forum about 4 days ago discussing a Belden cable that is called the Brilliance line and the 75 ohm version was the 1694A RG6 DTS/HDTV. I hear it is pricey and still needs the Canare RCAs added.
Thanks to both of you for your valued info. I need info quick cuase I have to decide soon so your help is very important to me. I'll check the options you both mentioned. Thanks again...
