hi all
I have a single S video output from my cable TV box, which I'd like to run to my TV and to my HD recorder.
If I just get a y-cable splitter would that result in a 'darker' picture, such as happens when I do the same with a composite video output? Or is the Svideo signal more 'robust'?

If you can find an inexpensive passive splitter for S-video, try it out and see if it produces decent results with your equipment. For most video applications, if you're using a passive splitter, the signal strength will drop too much for each downstream component. What you then need is a powered splitter that will ensure that the correct signal strength is sent to each device.
