I want to buy a low end audiophile type of home theater system and spend approx. $10,000, including a 36+ inch tv monitor.I do not want a jazzed up top of theline midfi system. I will be using the system primarily for watching sports, cable tv, and the occaisonal video disk. As for audio listening, I have a fine system in my living room. This one will be going into my den which is approx. 20'x12'.
I live in Westchester, NY. If anyone has any suggestions of decent dealers in the area, I'd be curious.
I would prefer speakers that are flat in sound and small in size.Thank you inadvance for your advice.

For the TV, I dont know, i still got me old 68cm sony trinitron.I recommend trying to pick up a denon 5700, they are being cleared out to make way for a new model 5800. The 5800 should be out sometime in september. I doubt any of these pre/pro/amp stuff will even come close. Yes seperates are better, but for better performance than the 5700, your talking $4000+ at least for seperates.
Speakers, the others covered, just try to get a timbre matched set all round. One thing you may consider is nOrh 5.1 setup. I have not heard these, but everyone says the only HT setup they have ever heard that is more preceise is the meridian at $30K. I have nOrh 7.0's on the way.
My only suggestion: buy HDTV. You can find (for example) a Mitsubishi 40" HD-RPTV for $2600.00. The difference between anamorphic DVD's (heck, even regular DVD's) on HDTV and regular TV is simply stunning.Don't forget, picture is part of HT as well as sound.
The little voices told me to stop listening.
Well, Justin surely did justice to this. About all that I can add is, not much, except you could pick up used amps and speakers easily maybe. The Belles 150A is a nice 3 channel for around $1500 list and you could use any other 2 channel amp for the mains which opens it up quite a bit if you've the space for 2 amps. As a straight HT amp, the ATI is hard to beat for the $$, but isn't the most musical.
4:3 televisons are obsolete. I would suggest the following, if you want small, neutral speakers (prices are approximate street prices):Display: Toshiba 40" 16:9 TV: $2000
DVD/CD player: Toshiba 6200: $500
Amp: ATI 1505: $1200
Pre/pro: Sherwood Newcastle AVP-9080R ($800)
Fronts: Dynaudio Contour 1.3MkII ($2000)
Center: Dynaudio Contour Center ($1000)
Rears: Dynaudio Audience 40 ($500)
Sub: Paradigm Servo 15 ($1200)
Cables and stands: $800
