Just saw a Toshiba 40-inch rear-projection HDTV for $2400. Considering the high-price of direct-view HDTVs. Is this the way to go? Any opinions?I liked the picture, but I really wasn't familiar with the source material. Since they stated it had 1120 horizontal scan lines, I guess you would need a progressive DVD output or, at least, a line-doubler to take advantage of the resolution.
Do other direct-view HDTVs come with line-doublers built-in???

The 40" Toshiba is an outstanding set. It has a better picture than most RPTV, simply because its screen size is so small. I've heard of people getting this set for as low as $2000 which makes it an even better deal. Nevertheless, even at $2400 it's a bargain. Make sure to allow another $500 or so for a Toshiba progressive scan DVD player. It really makes a difference with non-anamorphic DVDs. Good luck!
If you aren't familiar with the jargon and needs for HDTV, I suggest you get up to speed at: http://www.e-town.com/. You will find that many sets are claimed to be HDTV but few actually have the native capabilities you need. Yes you will need a progressive scanning dvd, but I think most, if not all, can output 480p (progressive). They must also have component video outputs for true HDTV. To get a full 1100+ lines of horizontal resolution, the set needs 9" projection tubes. Those cost at least $10K. See the discussions at e-town and the reviews of specific rear projectors for more information. I have the Panasonic PT56WXF95, which has all the latest HDTV stuff but only has 7" tubes. It lists for $5499, but I got one for $3499 + about $380 shipping at an auction on ebay. I have since read that some dealers are discounting this set to about $3999 delivered locally.
