I noticed on the Sony DA777ES receiver that the power rating into 8ohms (120w) was more than the power rating into 4ohms (100w). On most other amps, it seems to be the other way round. Why is it so?

Because the amp can't handle a 4 Ohm load well, I'd suspect. You have to make tradeoffs where you can when building an inexpensive receiver. My guess is this is where Sony made one.
