Does it occur when using DVD inputs or only cable/tv? It might be a funtion of the output of the cable TV ad itself -- an extra audio wave or noise.I remember hearing/seeing this phenomenon too but perhaps I've seen it too much or have too much background noise to really pay attention to it.
If it's broadcast-tv related I really don't know how you can filter it out unless you always hear it at a certain frequency. Even then you'd have to install a notch filter and deal with the sonic consequences of that.
As an aside, I don't think I've had cable for the last 7 or more years, so that might be why I didn't recognize what you mentioned until now. Maybe it's time to buy a DirecTV or DishTV?
Follow Ups:
The noise is only through the cable. No problems with DVD or tapes. I live in a heavily wooded area in northern Michigan, in an area with an association rule against cutting down any trees. I have had dish providers out to the house, and they have confirmed my fear. "As long as you live in this house, you will not be able to get a dish". Around here, dishes are aimed at a very low angle to Houston.
