Has anyone heard if Krell is going to upgrade their Audio & Video Standard or abandon it. They are pushing "theater packs" of their new monoblocks with CAST, yet they don't currently have a theater processor with CAST. I saw one dealer selling a current version of the A/V Standard in an unopened box on consignment at a drastically reduced price. They also are selling rather cheap on the used market. Hmmmm....
Follow Ups:
The sound from the HT standard is as good, if not better, than the av standard and it has the advantage of component video switching (and much lower cost). When I bought mine (HT standard) last spring, I called Krell about the new a-v standard and they said that there weren't any firm plans at this point about when an upgrade might appear. Just checked with website now and no news about it either. Perhaps at cedia something was said, but I suspect that the quality of the ht standard makes the av somewhat superfluous in the market. I'll be curious to see how the Casablanca II survives. At least one can say that it is MUCH better than the Casanova in many ways so there isn't any internal competition.
What are your feelings on the Casablanca II? I haven't had a chance to listen to it, but it definately intrigues me.Brian
Been offline for awhile. I haven't heard the Casablanca II in person but I understand it sounds very musical and is very good. Likely even stronger than the Krell HTS but haven't heard of any head-to-head comparisons. It certainly has MUCH greater flexibility (you can set up multiple subs, 7+ channels, change output slopes, etc.). However, this comes at a significant cost in comparison with the HTS (about double for a reasonably -- not completely -- staffed version). One concern is the shake-out period for Theta -- the original casablanca had a number of glitches and failures in the early days. I would recommend waiting just a bit longer before plunging into it so they get all of the bugs out.If you are in this type of price range, I'd recommend looking at the Meridian 800 series as well. If you really have an open pocketbook, next year will reveal a Mark Levinson surround processor that will, undoubtedly, do music at a level (and home theater) that will put everyone else to shame (and a price concomitant with such a feat).
The av standard is still Krell's flagship but, essentially, the HT standard sounds just as good, costs 1/3 the price and uses newer technology. The only advantage the av standard has is an analog bypass which the ht standard does not. All things being equal, I would prefer the newer ht standard
