I moved to this country from Europe a few years ago. Even then it was pretty standard for regular consumer VCRs in Europe to be switchable between PAL and NTSC systems. Here I have been completely unsuccesful in finding such a VCR. In fact, I haven't even been able to find a sales person who had a clue as to what I was talking about. I e-mailed all the major manufacturers, with no results. Where can I find a switchable VCR? Are they just not available here? If I got one from Europe and used it here with a 120V/240V step up transformer, would it work with an American TV? Would the AC frequency (50 Hz here, 60Hz in Europe) pose a problem? Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, hogy

You need to go mail order with some places back in New York (e.g., J&R Music World, 42nd street photo, etc.) and they should have such units. In all likelihood, you'll have to get a fairly expensive unit that does the "world" such as ones made by Panasonic or Samsung. Several of these can freely convert back and forth among formats but not necessarily have tuner capacity. As for using a vcr with the different voltage, this isn't a problem at all (I've got a British vcr multi-system that I use in the US) -- just the problem of matching the video output to the tv that you use here.
