To All ......
Did you ever wonder why you can buy a pretty decent HT receiver, with AC-3, DTS, 5 channels of amplification AND a FM reciever for $400 to $600 .... BUT it seems to be tough/impossible for a manufacturer to offer a reasonable pre /pro for anywhere in the range of $1K....Maybe it's economy of scale - i.e. selling zillions and zillions of receivers makes them a "great value"... Or maybe it's the market, i.e. the guys who want separates expect to pay $1.5 to 3K and up.
Or maybe I'm just stupid and wrong - and someone DOES make a reasonably priced good sounding pre/pro for under 1K ....
If you know of a "bargain" pre/pro with good sound in this price range I'd love to hear about it .....
thanks

Follow Ups:
I haven't personally heard the Rotel, Marantz, or the Parasound, but I'm sure they're all pretty good. I have the Sherwood Newcastle AVP-9080R which lists for $1200, but can be had for $800. It doesn't have loads of features, but sound quality is comparable to most of the $3000 pre/pros I've heard. Good luck!
I think Proton just came out with one for $900.
Be careful that it is actually better than the pre/pro's in some of the decent recievers. The pre/pro in the denon 3300 will be hard to beat. The parasound may do it, but I doubt the rotel will. The 4800 is used as a pre/pro in some of the best systems around.
Marantz AV-560 is right around $1K retail.Michael
It pretty much is economy of scale. If you must migrate from a receiver to the eliteist world of seperates, the most cost effective way of doing it is buy an amplifier first assuming your receiver has pre-amp outs. That's the way I am doing it.I'm in stage 1, almost to stage 2. I have a receiver doing the processing for a new Parasound HCA-1205a amp. The B&K Ref 30 is next.

Rotel, RTC-965. US$895Parasound AVC-1800, US$1200 -- not quite $1K, but give me a little
big of slack on that one.
RTC965 is discontinued; replace with RSP976 with retail of $1200, I believe.
So it seems. So much for that encyclopedic knowledge of pre/pros
I was trying to build :-)Just checked it out this evening.
