A buddy of mine has the Onkyo TXDS-575 and cannot get 5.1. He has a digital out (coax) running from the DVD to receiver. However it is only a standard composite cable, not an actual "digital coax". I believe this should make no difference. On the DVD player setup, it is saying 6CH. The movie is 5.1 and the receiver is digital. Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong? Thanks in advance.regards,
dave
Follow Ups:
It might be the cable you are using. A standard composite cable and a digital cable may be the same in construction and have the same ends, but most composite cables will have more resistance than will a digital cable, and if not all of the signal is able to trasmit through the cable, the reciever will not be able to properly decode the signal, because the signal will be "damaged". If changing settings as the previous follow-up suggests does not help, try changing to a better composite cable or borrow a digital cable to test the setup.Good luck!

Hi Dave,It is probably one of two things.
Either you are not playing the 5.1 soundtrack of the DVD (often there is a 5.1 and a two channel mix). This can usually be set via the DVD menus or by pushing the "AUDIO" button on the remote.
Or the DVD is not set properly. I'm not sure what 6 channel means, maybe the DVD player has 6 channel outputs and is outputting the an analog signal to them. For 5.1 the digital output should be set to DD or AC3 bitstream or whatever it may be called, but NOT PCM and the DTS output should also be turned on for DTS.
Hope that helps.
