In Reply to: NEWBE - I bought a Sony HTD-D820 - How does the rear speakers to work posted by Dr Evil on September 18, 2000 at 04:46:57:
Sounds like the unit is not receiving surround sound from your vcr, since the indicator light is not on (the rear speaker light you mentioned I presume).
Make sure you have a hi-fi VCR and that the movie has surround sound. If you do not have a movie RECORDED in surround sound (by a hi-fi vcr), or a hi-fi vcr to play it back, you won't have surround sound.
I had the same problem since I had a very old vcr. When I bought a new one, everything was fine, but still, movies I had recorded off of HBO and such using the old vcr were not in surround sound, since the old vcr never recorded them as such. Anyhow, just one idea, course' it could be something completely different. Good luck diagnosing the problem!

Thanks Jules for the info...My VCR was brought in by my wife when we were married. It is about 5 to 6 years old. So that might be the problem. I will be purchasing a DVD next before I upgrade the VCR. I am looking for a Sony DVD player to go along with the system. Any sugestions on a decent player for around 300.
