Hi- im a Senior at a University compiling data and opinions on Sony and other CRT based projector fan noise for a Senior Project. Does anyone out there own one of these projectors or any type of CRT projectors? (for example: Sony VPH-1272Q, VPH-1292, G90, etc etc) I am using a VPH-1272q projector as my guinea pig- anyone out there who also owns one or something similar- please answer the following questions:1. What is your experience with Sony VPH Projectors and in other CRT or even LCD Projectors in general?
2. How long have you been working with or owned the projector?
3. From your experience, do you find that Sony VPH projectors have high fan noise?
4. Is this a problem or not in your opinion?
5. If it is a problem, how do you see it being remedied?
6. If you are a Dealer, do your customers complain of fan noise?
7. What options do the user have if he or she finds that they cannot bear hearing the fan noise?
8. Are there other projectors on the market that have the same problem?
9. Are there projectors that emit no noise from their fan system?
10. any other thoughts or solutions are welcome; thanks!
Follow Ups:
I've got the G70 and have been using it for about 14 months.My responses:
1) fan noise is significant and a detraction although not horrible;
2) I built a box around it (ceiling mounted) with sound proofing in it but it still makes significant noise that can be heard during the quiet portions of movies;
3)what can be done about the noise? either a better soundproof box (mine is not as good as could be done professionally)or mounted in a separate enclosure behind the viewing room (e.g., like a professional theater);
4) the only alternative I know of that has no fan noise is the DWIN series of projectors -- I chose the Sony because of picture quality and a concern that no fan noise (heat sink approach of DWIN) might mean reliability problems due to overheating.
1. What is your experience with Sony VPH Projectors and in other CRT or even LCD Projectors in general?Had a couple of Sony CRT monitors, one was sold last year to a friend & had its first break down in 17 years - only minor. The chassis was made in Germany. Our other monitor is still going strong.
2. How long have you been working with or owned the projector?
Had the Barco 18 months and have learned how to fine tune it.
3. From your experience, do you find that Sony VPH projectors have high fan noise?
Our Barco was originally set up by a Sony technician who said it was quieter than the Sonys he usually dealt with.
4. Is this a problem or not in your opinion?
The annoyance of fan noise depends on -
(i) where the unit is (suspended or on the floor)
(2) how quiet is the house location
(3) how well damped the room acoustics are with carpet etc
There is no doubt that fan nopise on anything can be annoying & distracting but maybe less so with a projector as the attention between audio & video is divided.5. If it is a problem, how do you see it being remedied?
Better electronics producing less heat so requiring fewer fans
6. If you are a Dealer, do your customers complain of fan noise?
N/A
7. What options do the user have if he or she finds that they cannot bear hearing the fan noise?
Reports suggest some have boxed them in with disastrous results as they overheat & shorten the life of the tubes dramatically. Good ventillation is essential. There is no easy alternative while CRTs are used.
8. Are there other projectors on the market that have the same problem?
Any projector or piece of equipment having a fan has a noise problem. This computer drives me crazy.
9. Are there projectors that emit no noise from their fan system?
No idea.
10. any other thoughts or solutions are welcome; thanks!
Plasma screens are the only real option but they are too expensive at the moment.
Hope this helps
John
Toshiba TLP MT1 (LCD) has near zero fan noise. It also has a built in line doubler for video!
