I am looking for advice on adding a DVD player to my 2-Channel stereo system. I would be running it through Hales Rev 3 speakers, Classe CA-300 Amp, BAT VK-3i pre. My TV is a new JVC 35 inch. Are there any DVD players that offer sound effects for two channel systems?
Thank you,
Mike Allen

Recently I purchased a Pioneer DV-05 DVD player with the same purpose in mind. I had been running my VCR into my 2 channel stereo system and thought a DVD would sound much better. My system is an Audio Refinement Complete with Snell Type C speakers. I did side by side comparisons and the VCR input was more dynamic and had better bass. Another thread on the forum earlier has mentioned this phenomenon also. Something is lost when a DVD has to translate to analogue audio. The DVD does come with a couple of sound effects that did no do a whole lot for me. I do like the picture of the DVD player. It puts a VCR to shame. As far as surround sound effects go, I already was getting some of that effect with just my two Snell's . I don't know how many times my wife and I would be sitting there and turn to each other and say WOW. The effects would sound like they were behind us or way off to the side. This was with the VCR. My DVD experience is too new to tell if it will do the same thing.I wrote this just to tell you that in my case the VCR to DVD conversion may not improve your sound as much as you would hope. I presume that if one had a 5.1 system the sound would be much better.
... your 2 channel system sounds as good as it appears it would. Forget about cheap fixes to give you good sound effects, been there, tried that! If you are fussy about good audio you will not appreciate crappy surround sound effects. It really is a waste of time, effort and dollars unless you are prepared to set up a decent system with a good processor (the most critical of components). While you are at it choose a processor that will improve the audio from your CD player (or the new DVD player).
However if funds are limited at the moment go for a Toshiba or similar that has the Dolby Digital processor built in. You can progressively add good used amps & speakers (match them with your stereo pair carefully, particularly the centre channel if you ever incorporate it) and then finally take the plunge with a good processor. They are improving daily and prices continue to come down as features improve.
Warning: DVD players are about to change with the introduction of DVD-A (maybe????). This could be good news for buying a discounted DVD player that will not play DVD-A or bad news if you get one that depreciates overnight because it becomes obselete - depends on your point of view!
Hope this helps
John
I am not sure how good the "effects" are, but our bedroom system has a Sony DVP-S530D which has something called Virtual Enhanced Surround. It has a couple of options (VES A and VES B) which are suppose to give you some rear channel effect while using only two front speakers. That's about as much as I am able to determine from the manual. The S530D we have is about a year old, so it is quite likely that Sony has replaced it with a newer model.
