excellent cables that'll survive through several upgrades while
not breaking the budget.

For a little bit more, I'd go with the Homegrown Audio Silver Interconnects. If your friend has DIY skills, ie he can use a soldering iron then they are downright astonishing for the cost.

As with the gear from better cables, these too will survive several
upgrades.

There are retail options as well, but direct places like Better Cables and Homegrown Audio are going to win in the bang for buck category.
