This weekend I went looking for a hd/capable monitor in the $2-4K range. progressive scan and good 4:3 were pre-requisites. 2 TVs for $2500 were 36" Loewe and 36" Sony XBR -- both for $2.5K. Sony was capable of anamorphic and 1080i while the Loewe seemed to have better picture quality (at the store), but does not have 1080i. Any pros and cons between these two systems? Also, most of the hdtv I saw at the store looked terrible on standard broadcast with the resolution degrading when the camera panned and improving when the camera was still (it was showing a college football game). What is the cause for this? Poor line doubling? OR, is this how all hdtvs look w/ std broadcasts?
Thanks,
Byas

and I am very happy owning it and playing widescreen DVD's on it! On regular cable I usually use the cinema mode, I really don't care about it cropping the top and bottom, unless there's info I need there and then I just put it into 4:3 or panorama. The picture is truly revealing, and it shows all there is to see from the sources. I can tell the difference between watching my Canon GL-1 mini-DV camcorder playback and my Pioneer DV-09 DVD's, and I must say the camcorder looks sharper. That is how revealing the Loewe is, and Canon's website does say that mini-DV is sharper frame by frame than DVD (due to compression), the Loewe confirms this, although the difference is slight. I bought my PLanus on closeout for 2375, and feel this set will last until high def becomes prolific, and I think HD DVD's will come out in another 8 or 10 years, according to etown.com, but who knows??? By then, it'll retire to a side room or bedroom and the sets out then will obviously surpass anything available now.
I believe you should also look at the RCA MM36110 and the ProScan PS36810 (practically the same TV). I recently saw one at the WIZ displaying a computer image (it has VGA inputs) and the resolution blew me away. I think as long as you could feed it good source it won't disappoint. The RCA DTC-100 or ProScan PSHD105 should be good for that purpose. It is a HDTV tuner and also picks up regular analog signal and upconverts it to 480p. You should be able to find the RCA TV for less than 2K and the ProScan for a bit more. The Tuners go for around $600.
Good Luck
