For years I sent all of my signals directly to the monitor. However last year I purchased a unit with video switching. Much easier to use for the rest of the folks who do not know how you have your system routed. You press dvd on your pre-amps remote and the video is switched to the picture output of the dvd and sound is played to thru the speaker. Usually it is a seemless transition. Do you have to have it? No. It is just easier to use. No switching inputs on your tv and then on your reciever or preamp. But the most important thing to condsider is signal degradation. Only the better receivers, processors, and video switchers can switch video signals without degrading the signals. You may want to experiment and to see if you are trading ease of use for picture quality.
