Hi Rayman,As one newby to another,I like Yamaha. Mine's a 5250(same as 596 I think?). Bought mine at Sears for $325 (list $499).They price matched the web, although I had to go to 2 stores to do it. Good bang for the buck!
Get the RXV-800 (around $800) it has a awesome amount of DIGITAL hookups. The best sounding too, It will last for years. Did I mention I have one?
I'd have to agree with that one. Yamaha makes some great units. I have the Yamaha RX-396 stereo receiver and that thing is great. It took a great beating. My friend also had it and he was the one that recomended it to me. He had JBL D-130s hooked up to that thing. For a receiver that is 50w x 2, it handled well with speakers of that power. I also recomend Mitsubishi AC-3 receivers. They are sweet and have a ton of A/V options. I recently purchased the MRV-800 model, and it is quite inpressive. Good luck.
