Hi, I'm not really a video fan. I would rather spend on my audio. But I have a dilemma.I have a Sony back projection TV (42") and I use Pioneer DLV 919 LD/DVD combo player. The problem I have is that the seound is pretty bad even on DVD. Dialogs are almost unintelligible even on DVD. Is there an easy fix for this? Or do I have to go for a home theatre setup? If so, any suggestions? My Hifi and TV are in different rooms so a link up is out of the question.

I think I know the answer to your problem... and it does not involve 5 speakers.. .HT receiver etc.... there is something new from Magnum Dynalab.... email me if you'd like to know more....
A cheap Dolby prologic receiver with a center speaker will clear up the dialog with vhs and DVD. Dolby Digital will do better with DVD but not as cheap.
The standard issues aside (is it hooked up correctly?, are the connections clean & tight). You may wish to upgrade the cables, if you are using the stuff that came in the box along with the DVD player. It is poor at best and is making both the sound & picture less than it can be. You don't have to go crazy as a number of companies make inexpensive cables, but it will cost you at least $100 to upgrade both audio & video connections.
My first question is whether there is a problem with the DVD player. If the center channel information isn't coming through you will lose the dialog. If that's not it, a cheap way to upgrade a TVs sound system is to use a computer sound set up. I ran a DVD player through an old preamp and a Cambridge Soundworks powered sub/sat system for a while. It sounded surprisingly good.I think a low cost HT system is a better way to go, but it would be more money. I have switched from a separate audio and HT system to one combined system because I'm enjoying the HT side so much.
Good luck,
Alan
