OK, so here's the question: do high-end DVD players like the Muse Model 9 or CAL CL-2500 function as well with old, 4:3 sets as cheaper consumer models? I know that sometimes functions (like pulldown) are sacrificed for performance at the upper end. Thanks for the info.

Yes it will work, the question is "is it worth the money". You will not be able to see the difference on a cheap TV between a $200 DVD player and the top line ones. Of course you plan on buying a large screen TV soon then a good player may be worth it.
Well, I was thinking in terms of getting very solid redbook and 24/96 audio playback primarily, with the ability to add a better screen later. And the set isn't *that* bad, it was a fairly expensive RCA when new and has S-video inputs, at least.My question is still whether you end up watching everything in letterbox based on the player or the software.
A lot of DVDs have both formats on them. Letterbox is OK as long as you are not too far away otherwise the image becomes VERY small.
