My first question is whether there is a problem with the DVD player. If the center channel information isn't coming through you will lose the dialog. If that's not it, a cheap way to upgrade a TVs sound system is to use a computer sound set up. I ran a DVD player through an old preamp and a Cambridge Soundworks powered sub/sat system for a while. It sounded surprisingly good.I think a low cost HT system is a better way to go, but it would be more money. I have switched from a separate audio and HT system to one combined system because I'm enjoying the HT side so much.
Good luck,
Alan
