I currently have two systems in the same room, audio and video. The audio system has a preamp (actually a pro audio mixer), power amp (top of the line 2 channel Sony ES amp from a couple of years ago), and two CD players (Revox B226 and Ah Tjoeb '99). The video system uses a Pioneer VSX-26TX THX Ultra certified receiver with DVD player. I would like to integrate the two systems. Speakers will include Vienna Acoustics Beethovens up front, a VA Maestro center, and Infinity Prelude QPS surrounds (the only speaker that fits in the space), and two HSU TN1220 subs being fed by an HSU 500 watt amp. I also have an additional amp that is currently powering the fronts in my Video System. For space and spousal harmony reasons, I would like to integrate both systems using the Pioneer as a surround processor/preamp and center channel amp. I would get rid of the mixer and run all the sources through the Pioneer. My other choice would be to trade the Pioneer (100% purchase price)towards either an Acurus Act 3 (currently on back order as Acurus is waiting for some DTS boards or some such) or the new Adcom GTP-760. I would also in this case need a center channel amp and am leaning towards either the Marantz MA500 or MA700.
Would moving towards either processor offer a noticeable improvement over the Pioneer used as processor only?
Thanks for the suggestions.

Hi Tony, I've done a very similar if not identical thing as to what you're proposing with the Pioneer and such. I have a full stereo system as my main/front speakers powered by an integrated amplifier. In addition I've got a DD receiver that I'm using essentialy as a surround/processor/amplifier. All sources go to both amplifiers, either directly (the dvd player) or split with y cords at the source output then to each. It works and sounds great. It gives me an enormous amount of flexibility, in that I can use the system only as a stereo system, or with the receiver as a large surround system. The speakers from the receiver acting as the surrounds, with all speakers combined it contains a total of 8 speakers, the front mains, the mid/sides, then the rears, center and sub. I love it and it really does sound great !! Do you understand what I've done here ?? You've got the equipment, try it, what have you got to lose, a little time and energy to move everything around !!! The bigger/better the system, the more of a pain it is to do anything with. Let me know what you think !! Peace SteveF (p.s. Heh Hantra !!!)
Thanks for the response. However, I want to "simplify" my system which is why I'm looking for a high quality surround processor that also does stereo well.
Tony,Since you already have the Pioneer, why don't you run it that way. Then, go to a dealer and pick up the Acurus, or Adcom for a couple hrs. and take it home to see which one you like. I know it'll be harder to tell without some burn-in, but I'd hate for you to have to spend that kind of money for a negligable improvement.
Agree?

Well, the dealer will allow me to take the Acurus (when available) and
Adcom. I was just wondering if it was worth my time and effort to do
it, if anyone had any opinions.
All it's going to cost you is a bit of time. It's worth it just to see.B
Other than $900, nothing : )
