Are HD's's the only tv's one can buy with 16:9, or
does standard digital come in this as well. If so,
would the price be so near that you might as well
just buy the HD? I'm just not sure if I can afford
HD right now, but I desperately want to break away
from my 4:3 now that I am using DVD. Your input
would be greatly appreciated.

I have a 27" Sony Wega. It has a 16:9 mode. Sony's web site says it uses "v-compression", but I'm not sure what the resolution is in the 16:9 mode (i think it is 480 lines). It looks great hooked to my DVD player.El
Since you didn't specify whether you prefer a rear projection or a direct-view TV, I assume you are open to either.Try the Samsung TSK3092WF. It's a direct-view 30" 16:9 SDTV (480p) with built-in line doubler, 1 RGB-HV input, 1 component video input, 2 composite video inputs, and 1 S-Video input.
I just got one for about two grand at Tweeter and despite the small size, it's fabulous. Works really well with DVDs.
As a bonus, it has a built-in AC-3 decoder with built-in speaker outs for center and surround speakers.
I have been watching some of CBS's prime-time HD programs on it and the picture is great.
