hi,
could someone explain to me what is so special about reference
dvd players. i see that they are generally 2-3 times the price of
standard dvd players and i was wondering if there is really a
difference. is the picture better? is the sound better? is this
marketing b.s.? i have not tested one out but maybe you can
save me a trip!! thanks!!!

I originally had a JVC DVD player.... then i got the SONY DVP-S7700 and let me tell you the difference is nothing less than remarkable. Not only is the build quality substantially better than the JVC but the AUDIO/Video cannot even be compared! At least comapring these 2 beasts, i would say that the 'reference' DVP-S7700 is definetly worth the money
according to Stereophile the picture quality is the same on each player. From what I have seem I would tend to agree, at least on the mass market TVs I have seen. The more expensive machines tend to have better internal construction e.g. better power supplies and better sound (or so it is claimed).
Yes reference sound better and provide a better picture. But since the picture quality of most dvd players is already so good the small improvement is not worth the money for most folks. However if you are a videophile it may well be. I am an audiophile and if I can get a 10% improvement in sound for double the cost, I'll take it!!!
The difference in picture quality can be made up for by using better quality interconnects, rather than the junk that came in the box. I can't comment on the sound as I have not heard these "high line" players in stereo systems.
