In Reply to: Sony Playstation 2 for DVDs? posted by Steve L. on December 09, 2000 at 15:39:06:
I posted this question too, and the response was it was ok on both audio & video, but not as good as a Sony DVD player in the $400 to $500 range. At another site, someone responded that he felt there was no difference between DVD players to begin with in the $200-$400 dollar range and the PS2 performed as good as any of those similary priced players.
However, I would like to see a review of its playback abilities too. I think etown.com is doing a review if they ever get their hands on one, which might explain why this question gets so few responses: very few people were able to purchase one due to the shortages ! :-)

Well, I got lucky and bought one!! But can't set it up until Christmas (surprize for the rest of the family). I don't do "home theater" at home, still too happy with 2-channel for music. The PS2 will just be hooked up to a decent 32" TV.Maybe I'll post a review after I get it set up. Shouldn't conflict with my Listener duties, since we don't do "home theater" in the magazine either
It's too bad you aren't into HT though, not because you should be, but because I was looking for someone that had some DVD player experience AND had a PS2. That way a 'comparison' could be made.
Either way, I look forward to your opinions.
Happy Holidays.
Alright I have a Pioneer DVD player and a Sony PS2,hooked up to the Energy Take 5 and a New Harman Kardon DD, DTS receiver.
It's a mid level Pioneer and I see a small diference if I look hard enough between the two. I don't here any audio diference, it doesn't sound bright at all, I guess it depends on what kind of equipment your using.
Most of the games that came out are just alright, all of them better than the Playstation 1. There are a couple games right now that are amazing. They'll get better in the next couple months even.
The bad part....The FAN!! Loud and it's on all the time. To me it's enough not to use the thing as a DVD player if you have another player in the house.
Just look at the price, I paid $449 Canadian, I think it's selling at $299 US or something close to that.
If you love the games and the internet possibilites of the PS2 then it's a good buy. If you don't play games and don't care much about the furture of the Playstation then just buy a regular DVD player.
Oh yeah the controls aren't hard to use at all, I'd rather use the controller than a remote! Everything is where you want it, you just have to get used to it, like controlling the games.
Hope this helps

This might help answer some of your questions. I am also interested in the Playstation 2 as a DVD Player ...http://www.sharkygames.com/hardware/console/ps2_us_dvd/
If you find others, maybe you could post them here as well ...

I have a PS2, DVD clarity is great and picture reproduction is very good. However the control is very hard to master, but press select for the menu and the slow motion is well, lackluster. Sound quality is very good to. Great buy, but not if you just want DVD playback, get a stand alone DVD unit, as they have great remotes I recommed the Sony DVS300
