Thanks in advance for your help. I'm a regular Audio inmate, but am just getting into home theater. My question is:What are your best recommendations for a DVD player in the $1000 range? What about similarly priced receivers?
Thanks again, folks. Most appreciated!

the Outlaw 1050 is a good choice! I have had one for about a month and a half now and I think it is great! I just added a Pioneer DV-C503 5-disc DVD changer ($279 at Rex A/V locally, no affiliation) and am really enjoying it both for DVDs and CDs (a definite improvement over my 10-year old Onkyo). It will also play CD-R and pass 96/24 signals from DADs - I don't really know how much of a benefit that will really be since availability of these is limited and it looks to be a dead format, but it is nice to have the option. For just over $900 total, I think it's a great entry level setup.
Most appreciated. I think I'm coming to settle on the Outlaw 1050 for a receiver. I will definitely put your player recommendations to use. Thanks again. And, man, am I glad I'm looking at a lower price tag for this initial excursion. On the audio side, at least, I know how to spend my $$ effectively, and keep as much of it in pocket as possible. Flying a little blinder over here. Have a good holiday, all.

I concur with others that you do not need (nor should you at this time) spend $1000.
How about a $300 Sony Playstation 2 (obviousl adds more perks than a normal DVD player)
or else a cheaper Toshiba or PAnasonic. Or one ofthe4 mega DVD changes can be found for $400-$600, which might save you trips to the entertainment centerdg
Hi D, I have a Toshiba 2200 player which only cost me $250 online. I'd highly recomend it. I don't see any reason to invest anywhere close to $1000 on a dvd player, not even for a receiver. If you're going to spend that much money, I'd start thinking about seperates. Everyone thinks that seperates are so expensive, but once you do your research, you'll find that to not be true. And of course it all depends on what you expect out of your sysytem. Just my input. SteveF
Is supposed to be very good (it's on my "must have" list). It's about $1100 mail order. And it is worth it, maybe. It has progressive outputs that can be used with HDTV, but it is very good with CD Audio as well as capable of playing SACD. Overall, stellar video quality. This is based on reviews I've read in Stereophile's Guide to Home Theater and E-town. Here's a link for the E-town review .Now, if music is not your focus and you don't have an HDTV, then you can probably get a cheap player for under $500 you'd be very happy with.

Why on Earth would you want to spend that much money on a DVD player? Does your TV have progressive scan inputs?
Okay, that's an answer, too! I haven't really looked into the DVD player aspect yet. (I've checked receivers out a bit.) I was just operating on the assumption that there were players available, and worth the ducats, in that price range. I appear to have been wrong in that assumption - which is good to know.As I say, I'm really at the beginning of my research here. Thanks for pointing out my (apparently pretty shocking, ;-)) error.
