Yesterday I wandered in to a really high $$$ audio/video store in San Antonio, TX to see if they had any tube gear and to lust over the HDTV as well as plasma screens. (walked around looking and listening for an hour. Place was not busy and none of the sales guys ever approached me....which I did not mind..... but either I don't look like a promising sale or they don't feel they need to push their products.) Anyway, I was most impressed with the home audio/video rooms they had set up. My wallet was feeling thinner as I sat in these rooms watching and listening. At one point, and this is where I think I was losing it, I had a coresponding olfactory response. What? Really. They were showing The Mummy (i think) and when men and horses were running through the desert killing each other....I could actually smell the dirt, sand soil whatever. At first I just figured that since this was a new buidling the HVAC system had come on and I was just smelling a little dust in the vents. But driving home I started wondering if this was some kind of sales thing to get more senses involved and give a more real experience so that your brain has no problem spending a gajillion dollars on this stuff? Anybody else think I am crazy. My Area 51 buddies tell me that the technology is there. :-) Really, I know it sounds kinda Disney but anybody ever heard of a system that generates corresponding smells....other than your uncle Morris farting like a pack mule to make you feel like you are in the pen with those cows....:-)

Would be a nice trick as I understand that olfactory memory is stronger than most & triggers more vivid recollections.
In the 50's there were some experiments with "smell-o-vision" type stuff in movie theaters I think (around the same era that they installed shockers in seats).dg
