You must puchase DVD's specifically encoded with DTS, the vast majority are not. And usually the DTS encoded ones are about $5 more expensive. I had the same problem as you until I realized that there are only (well, at the time) 30 titles for DVD that were even released with DTS. Make sure the movie says it's encoded for DTS, you're probably doing everything else correct.
