I'm just setting up a dedicated HT system, completely separate from my two channel system.Any suggestions on an entry level AV Pre/Processor? I'm also considering getting a good-value receiver such as the Outlaw 1050, but I've got a good stereo amplifiers sitting around unused from upgrading the music system and I'm willing to add a three-channel amp. I like the idea of having a system that would be more easily upgradable, either by upgrading amplification or the processor. Also, if HT is anything like music, I'd expect to get more for $xxx dollars in a processor sans built-in amplification. My budget is in the $500 to $800 dollar range.
Thanks,
Jim

Thanks for the replies.I'm slowly realizing there isn't much below $1000 in the way of HT pre/pro units. I've done some more digging and have come up with a few at or under $1200. Parasound, Rotel, the Sherwood Newcastle. I'll have a look into these.
Are there any units that stand out in the used market under, say, $1200? I realize that the quickly evolving formats make older processors a bit less attractive, but I've had good luck finding nice values in used audio gear.

In the used market at around $1200, check out the B&K Ref 20 and the Acurus ACT 3 (with bass mgt. upgrade). Another processor at just over $1000 (over the net) is the Sony 9000ES preamp. Happy hunting.
I haven't heard about it lately, but Outlaw had a plan to introduce a pre/pro for $599, which would also include a mono 90W power amp section. So far it's vaporware, but you might want to ask whether they still plan to follow through.Dan Bonhomme
Thanks Dan. I assume the mono 90w would be for a center channel? Makes sense. No need for an HT 3-channel or 5-channel amp.Jim
I thinkthe one channel is for use with the proprietary 6th channel that Outlaw has (not Dolby EX, but some extruded similar type).
This channel is the center rear channel.

You're right Dan G, but the included channel could be used for front center in a 5-channel setup.Unfortunately, as I said, the Outlaw pre/pro isn't being sold yet.
The only NIB pre/pro in that price range that I know of is the Sherwood/Newcastle AVP9080 which sells for about $800. You might want to try the used market.
