Hi,I posted a message some time ago re subwoofer choice and shortly afterwards my wife and I embarked on our honeymoon in the US. Several weeks and re-paid Credit Card bills meant that the subwoofer was on hold for a while.
However, am now definitely ready to make the plunge and have a A and B shortlist as follows and just looking for some feedback or advice.
A List
Boston Acoustics PV1000
REL Storm III
M&K of some type (possibly the 1250)B
B&W ASW2000
Velodyne (old series - HGS is stratospheric in price in OZ, starting at $3800 for HGS-10 !!!)My attraction to B&W is my experience with their product but am told that the choice of sub is less critical in terms of voice matching than say a centre or rear speaker.
The B&W is extremely large however and my room is not that accommodating, M&K seem to be a theatre speaker primarily and with the 805 being such a rythmic little speaker I don't want to do anything that may compromise their performance or stereo imaging.
That basically leaves the Storm III or Boston PV1000. Storm was a previous recommendation and I do think its a great sub but perhaps just a shade too big.
I like the Boston although havent had a chance to hear it properly in a dealer where the walls didn't nearly rattle down (thin walls) perhaps not representing the true ability of the sub.
Has anyone heard or used the Boston Acoustics PV1000 and what did they think?
Would I be seriously compromising the quality of the rest of my speakers by going for this one?
I like the fact that the REL strikes a balance between music and theatre and seem to get the impression that the Boston is similar - could someone confirm this?
Thanks for your help.
Follow Ups:
Have you seen the newer B&W ASW 2500? Its smaller than the 2000 and sounds much better. I beleive it was totally re-designed. I would like to sell my Sunfire True Junior and get one. I too have size constraints and have the N805's
Thanks Gary,Could not get the HSU in New South Wales (the state where I live) as suggested by tonygeno and yes I have heard of the 2500, none in Australia for quite a while and unfortunately a lot more expensive than the other options I posted here originally (nearly 3000 Australian dollars and not too much discounting going on).
I ended up looking at REL Storm III but wasn't impressed based on all I've read, also listened to the Velodyne, same thing and the HGS-10 is nearly 4 grand here.
Was on my way home on Tuesday after a long day and happened to come across a shop that offered a deal too good to refuse on the Boston Acoustics PV1000 and I bought it - will post a review on AudioReview.com once I've used it for a while.
So far I am very happy with it with the proviso that there is a way to go before I get the setup right. I have a THX Receiver but wanted to make use of the Sub's Xover and see how it best blends with the 805's so I have it connected to the L/R pre-outs at the moment with the main L/R Power Amp being fed at line level from the sub so it controls the split.
It's not a bad sounding sub, good for music and movies like the B&W but around 1ft sq.
I am beginning to think that the extension (officially 22HZ) is variable depending on the quality of the recording - so far DVD's have varied in their bottom end content.
Perhaps you should have a listed in view of the N805's you have also?
Not absolute gut-thumping bass but I didn't want that anyway.
Regards.
I owned the PV1000 for about a week. It currently has taken up residence in my uncle's stereo. He is quite pleased with it. However, there is no way this piece extends to 22hz. I did some sweeps with the Stereophile test disk and an RS sound pressure meter and this sub is strong to 31.5. Output takes a nosedive below that, even with room reinforcement. It should also be placed on a carpet as mine rattled incessantly when placed on a tile floor, due to the huge cone excursions needed to generate the kind of bass it can.
Why are you limiting yourself to these? I had the PV1000 at home. It will not go much below 30 with power. I would recommend instead a HSU TN1220HO with amp. About the same price as the Boston's but goes much lower, louder and with less distortion. Another good choice would be the TN1225. You give up 5hz on the low end but it's a bit easier on the eyes.
Thanks.I am not sure that HSU are available in Australia, I certainly cannot find any retailers locally (Sydney area) that stock the product so I really don't have a wide variety to choose from.
The room is not that large and I was thinking that a smaller sub would be ample - are there any other brands that might suit?
I am not a bass-head so don't really need a floorshaking, wall rattling sound - just some decent extension for the matrix 805's and a bit of chest thump for the Home Theatre.
Can you suggest anything else?
Thanks again.
Hsu's are available in Australia. Check out the link below.
Thanks.
