Hi All,I am currently in the process of setting up a pure home theater system. I do not care about 2 channel as I have a diff. setup for 2 channel music. Primary interest is HT, DPL, DD & DTS.
The components I am thinking of buying are :
Sony 50ES A/V Receiver.
Energy Take 5 system with e:XL8 subwoofer.I already have the following : Toshiba TP61H95, Sony DSS, Panasonic 310 DVD player.
Any opinions/comments on the 50ES/Take5 would be appreciated. I auditioned the Take 5 in my friends place and was impressed with the sound quality. I thought it offered an excellent price/performance ratio. Reg. the 50ES, I am solely purchasing this based on reviews. I heard the Yamaha RXV795 but it does not offer S-Video switching which I am planning to use for DSS/DVD. I presume that component video switching is too much to ask for in this price range, so I am not even going to ask.
My local dealer is quoting $1000 for the 50ES and $799 for the Take5. These prices seems really high. I do know that it is much cheaper thru mail order. I would prefer if the mailorder co. for the Sony is an authorized one so I would get the 5 yr warrantee. I would appreciate it if someone could post some mailorder places where I could get a good bargain. Also, any info on mailorder experience would be welcome. I would not mind paying a bit extra for good customer service and delivery as promised.
Thanks in advance.
Jay.
Go give a serious listen to the Yamaha 995. It has S-video switching. Be sure to listen to the 70 MM movie DSPs.
The prices you've been quoted are list price. Nobody pays list price, especially on mid-fi items. While the Take 5s are excellent for the size and online price ($500 with sub) it sounds like money and space is not your primary concern. Therefore I'd suggest the following speaker setup:4 B&W DM302
B&W CC#3
Energy ES-10 SubwooferThis combo, including tax, can be had for $900 from and authorized dealer. The B&Ws are much better than speakers than the tiny Take 5. The sub is also better than the 8" version. This combo is much better than the Take 5s. The Take 5s cannot be played loud and are only meant for small rooms. Get two pair of $100 Lovan stands for the 302 and you'll be set.
As far as receivers go, I don't recommend the Sony. You'd be better off with a Denon 2700. This doesn't have DTS, but DTS is dead. The Denon does have 6 ch. inputs. This receiver can be had for $600 from an authorized dealer. It sounds and is built much better than the Sony. Good luck!
Check out www.netmarket.com for prices on the Sony and Energy. The Sony 30ES might be all you need and would be cheaper. You might also read some reviews on the Denon receivers. I am in the process of looking myself and haven't quite decided. I have heard good things about the Denon 2700, and they may be coming out with a new version with DTS on board. The Denon and the Yamaha both have 6 channel inputs for any future formats, such as DVD audio. I was also looking at the Take 5 system, but the prices are so good at netmarket that I may go with the e:XL 16 speakers and the e:XL 10 or 12 sub.
I dealt with onecall.com in the past, satisfactoraly. But I would shop around. Maybe even some of the DVD web sites offer components. Sure is easy to check on the web.
good thinking on the s-video switching. It boils down to power and receiver flexibility to meet your needs with all the inputs, switching and preamp outs, etc.
