Component "C" vs. "P"

I recently hooked up my dvd player through the component hookups on the player and on the tv. But the outputs on the player are marked with "P's" and on the TV "D's". It seems to be fine. What is the difference, is it better that my s video to s video connection and is it ok like this. Thanks alot in advance
