Any opinions on which is better?
Hi Tom,I own a DV-09; bought it for CAD$1400 - US$980 brand new, so shop around, there are good deals to be had if you look hard enough. That said, I tend to agree with everything stated so far on this thread. I've come to trust the Elite source components as I also own the legendary Elite CLD-97 laserdisc player which by the way, makes an awesome transport when used in conjunction with a decent DAC. The DV-09 had the quietest transport on the market by far. I found this feature very important as I don't appreciate all the wizzing and clicking that goes on with a lot of the other players (Denon DVD 5000 included which to me is unacceptable at its price) during quiet passages of music or movies. It is also the only DVD player so far that actually plays CD's extremely well. It has a very smooth and accurate presentation and also mdoubles as a great transport.
Hope that helps.
Ken.
In my opinion, it has a sharper picture, greater picture control capability, digitally outputs a 24/96K signal, has better looks (the Denon looks like a tank to me) and was far, far less expensive. I bought a new unit from Canada and paid $1400 shipped. That said, unless you have money to burn, or you have a large CRT front projection setup, I wouldn't advise spending that amount of money on a DVD player. There are plenty of players (Sony, Panasonic, Toshiba, etc) that I would be very happy watching on either a RPT or direct view set. I've AB'd a number of popularly priced players on a 45" RPT and 27" direct view. In my opinion, differences are very subtle on the smaller screens, to the point of not feeling certain that they even exist.
One last point on the DV-09. It might be too resolving for you. Watching this player makes it quite obvious when there are problems with particular DVDs, or problems with the original film, mastering, etc. I love it, but it is possible that you might actually prefer a less resolving player. With the DV-09 on a large screen, shit becomes SHIT!!!!!
Of course, if the Pioneer has too much detail for you, its picture controls can be set to reveal less detail, making it look like other less expensive players.
You may want to read the June issue of Sound&Vision, pg 42 where David Ranada reviews 4 players including the Sony 530D.
The Denon 5000 certainly isn't a rebadged Panasonic. It is built like a tank. But the Pioneer is a work of Japanese art as well, and is equally impressive. I have not a/b'd the two, but I have noticed that the Pioneer is a much quiter player when playing DVDs. The Denon seems uncommonly noisy, and I've seen this on three separate players. It's probably the noisiest DVD player I've ever heard. Two local dealers carry both Denon and Pioneer. I asked them both which they liked better, and they both said the Pioneer. The Pioneer player is also in their reference HT system, so that must say something. Stereophile's Guide To Home Theater tested both players. The reveiwer (forget which one) loved them both, but the Pioneer stayed on as his reference player while the Denon went back to the manufacturer. Both are excellent players, and I'm sure you'd be satisfied with both, but the evidence seems to point to the Pioneer as the superior player...and it doesn't hurt that it's $500 cheaper. The drawer is cool too with that airlock.Which would I pick? Neither, since I'm happy with my $350 Toshiba and find it foolish to spend $2000 or $2500 on a player that will be obsolete in two years. But everyones priorities are different, and given the choice I'd take the Pioneer. Good luck!
I've heard alot of good reviews of the DV-09, it has a good reputation. I know that abunch of the denon's are rebadged Panasonics since Denon and Panasonic are both owned by Matshushita. (the DVD-3000 is supposedly similar to the A-310)Jay
