I recently purchased a Pioneer DVD player(DV333), Reciever (VSXD409), JBL NSP1 5 piece system, and JBL PB12 250 watt subwoofer.
The system works really well for any type of CD and for action segments of DVDs. However, there is a major problem when people are talking on DVDs (which does not occur when people talk on CDs). When the only sound coming from a DVD is talking, there is a very annoying noise coming from the subwoofer. It sounds sort of like the sound you get when tapping on a microphone. I have no idea what to do about this, or what component is causing this problem. We do do have dual laser pickup, and I am wondering if the dvd player could be the problem. Have checked the optical cable and crossover levels, and cannot find anything wrong. Please help me!
Follow Ups:
Sounds like the receiver or subwoofer. Could the volume that is set on the sub be too high? Could the level of the signal being sent to the sub from the receiver be too high? If it just occurs "when people are talking", it may be a problem with the decoding of the signal from the DVD player. The center channel may be decoded incorrectly and there is some sort of leakage to the sub. I believe either the receiver or subwoofer is where you need to concentrate. If possible, and I know it won't be easy, get another surround receiver and see if the problem still occurs.
Thank you for the advice. I am thinking that it is probably a problem with the decoder in the receiver. If it was the dvd player than we would have the problem with cds too. We have checked all of the levels and everything seems to be fine. Since the reciever has the final control of the sound, I think it has to be the problem. Going to call pioneer tomorrow!
Voice overs normally comes through the center speaker. You may have a problem with the DVD player or the receiver. I agree that it plays audio cd's as well but the dvd is coded differently.Solution suggested:
* Try another DVD player
* Check whether your receiver has the facility of bypassing the surround mode and going on stereo. This will give some indication of where the fault lies
* Reciever has a problemHope this helps
