I have both Sony DVD player and receiver. In the receiver manual, it specifically mentioned that you can't record digital signal with analog means since they are on a different system bus, so I hooked up both the digital and analog outputs of the DVD players (both audio/video) to the receivers with no problem.

That is exactly how mine is hooked up except for the video portion. Since I am using a video enhancer to defeat the macrovision, I have the analog audio outs from the DVD player connected to the receivers DVD in. The digital optic cable is also connected from the DVD out to the receivers optical in. Why I can't have both connected at the same time is what bothers me.....
