I am in the process of shopping for a new sub for my h/t room size of 15x20x8 with its price ranging from $1k+ to $2k max. I do play lots of DVD action flix movies so I want something with deep extension with fast bass to match with my Merlin TSM-M monitor that can go down flat at 50hz. My choice would be Velodyne HGS-15 (1) or Sunfire Signnature sub(2) or what?
Thank you!

For $2k plus change you could get 2 REL Strata IIIs. You WILL love it! :-)I'm smiling because I just added a 2nd Strata to a music system with Merlin VSM-SEs, and my HT system uses 1 Strata III. It is an outstanding sub - which is why there are so few on the used market.
I owned a Velodyne FSR-12, and keep up on their line. The REL is in a different sonic league, while being competively priced. Please see my site for more.
Don't miss checking out the HSU 1220. You'll save yourself some money and you'll have better musical response.
You know, I considered going the Hsu route, but it didn't pass the SAF. My S.O. said she doesn't want anything to do with a speaker that looks like a hot water tank or a silo. Personally, I think it looks cool, and it has a lot more visual interest than the cube-shaped Velodyne FSR-12 that I picked up instead.BTW, I do like the Velo. It produces more SPL than I'll ever need, at least in the room where it lives today. Pretty musical, too. I picked it up at soundcity.com for $745 shipped to my door. The best local price for the same unit was $800 used, $1300 new.
Some people have opted to put them laying down behind their couch. I don't know your furniture place, however; this might be an option.
I use a Sunfire in a room 12x19x10 and it does a fantastic job with "booms" and "bangs"... Does real nice on music as well... especially if you have large main speakers, don't care for it's upper frequencies (70+). Has an extremely small footprint as well.See if you're dealer will allow you to take a demo unit home. That's the only way. If they won't, find one that will.
I have an HGS-18, and this sub really puts it out! The 15 is an amazing sub as well. I actually went with the Velodyne over the Sunfire because I felt the Velodyne had a cleaner sound, although the Sunfire is very good for movies, too.I'd say to demo both of them to see which one sounds better in your room. Also if there is a WAF involved, she may tend to lean towards the Sunfire. I got around the size issue with the Velodyne by having her listen to it, with her eyes shut so she made the decision based on sound only. Plus, she put a vase w/flowers on it, so it does look quite nice.
