I am interest to upgrade my Sony SDP-EP9Es ... budget is 2K and I intent to use it only for movies, no 2 channel music. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

You should definitely look at the B&K AVR305.It can be had for under $2,300.00 if you look hard. I know it's a bit over your $2,000 price, however; This is a 7.1 system and the preamp purchased separately, is over $2,000.00. Audioreview just listed this model, so read the reviews for the AVR 305 & 307.
Denon 5800 ($2800) or Denon 3801 ($800). Which one depends on how many watts per channel you need. The 5800 is 170 wpc and the 3801 is 105 wpc. Each does: stereo, Dolby Pro-Logic, Dolby Digital 5.1, Dolby Digital Matrix 6.1, DTS 5.1, DTS-ES Matrix 6.1, DTS-ES Discrete 6.1 and DTS-NEO (surround from 2 channel audio). Right now these two handle the "mostest" formats. If you don't need the power, each has preamp outputs for each channel.
Thomas, where can you buy the Denon 3801 for $800.00?
I have seen them for as low as $840
