Controlling all of your equipment through the AVR is probably the most convenient way to go. Connecting all of your equipment to the AVR first will allow you to control the audio/ video switching etc. with the single AVR remote.
By connecting your VCR to your TV,listening to your the soundtracks from your VCR means that the signal passes through the TV's audio circuitry first and then through the AVR's- an unecessary extra step.
