My parents were considering getting a DSS as apposed to the cable TV that they have now. I was researching prices and I came across all these different 'cards'. What are they and what do the do?
Follow Ups:
In addition to being illegal DirecTV has just about wiped them out with a massive ECM (electronic countermeasure) before the Super Bowl rendering them un-reprogrammable.
I heard that there are software based card hacks. I think you hook up the DSS to your computer, and you can get software that will hack it. Did these get fried to?
How did they manage to wipe out the cards. Are the boxes designed so that they can signal the box to send a large voltage spike to the card?If so how can they tell which cards to zap and which not to zap?
Inquiring minds want to know.
(The same inquiring mind has a 20" mono TV with no DSS, No Cable and no TV reception because I live in the lowlands)
Not sure- obviously they want to keep it secret - probably a sequence of codes to "re-programme" unauthorised cards to no longer function properly, but many rogue DSS card resellers claim their cards are impervious to ECM from the major broadcasters.
DSS cards allow you to decode the DSS signal from the DSS service you subscribe to.There are a lot of DSS "test" cards available.
They decode almost all Digital Satellite Services, allowing you to watch DSS transmissions without subscription fees.
They are not legal to use except for testing purposes only.
(nudge nudge, wink wink- say no more.....)
"They are not legal to use except for testing purposes only."They are illegal for ALL purposes -- because they're used to intercept satellite programming without paying for it.
This is both a criminal and civil violation.
Be my guest . . .
