We subscribe to a digital cable service (AT&T Broadband to be specific) and the component sized "cable box" has true audio and video outputs via RCA jacks. I know for a fact that these boxes are available with S-video outputs to run the video either through a receiver or to the S-video input on a TV. I would like to know if these boxes are available with digital audio outputs. You might ask, "why doesn't he just call AT&T and ask them" , well I've tried that and they don't have a clue, I have seen the S-video jacks so I know they exist, yet the bright ones at AT&T didn't know what I was talking about. Does anyone have any experience with this? I would love to run a digital coax directly from the cable box to my receiver. Thanks for any help.Ben
Follow Ups:
I recently subscribed to digital cable. I noticed that the back of the Motorola terminal had a knock out for S-Video and another knock out for SPDIF. Also the front of the box claims Dolby digital. I called the cable company and they said they were looking into getting digital terminals with S-Video and Digital audio output. Now I wait or switch to satellite.
Seems like a nationwide problem of ignorance.
Well, run digitally on 100+ channel. For movie, Dolby Digital is detected by my reciever. However, sound from my DVD player far far better though.I'm happy right now make me rent less from blockbuster && go out of cinema.
I'm subcribe with Comcast Digital Cable.
I'm jealous, great for you though.Ben
Well, digital cable suppose to carry digital video & audio. Call your provider and complain. Or ask them whether you can purchase the box by yourself. You pay for the service and surely you want the best service. :)
Try talking to AT&T about getting HDTV ever on cable lines. I've talked to so many people who have given me word of "never" to "you can get it now if the stations are broadcasting it", that I am sure that no one there knows what they're talking about. Getting transfered up the ladder through "leads" and "repair techs" gets you nowhere.I guess it doesn't matter anyway. The local and a lot of network broadcasters seem to see nothing in HiDef that'll make them any money. So it looks like they'll just keep abusing the free bandwidth the FCC gave them by cramming more Standard Def digital signals in.
Someone at the FCC needs to get some cojones and lead this thing better.
I think our best shot is Hi Def on DVD. Supposedly it's in the works, but last I heard it could still be two years out.
Bummed.
See Ya. Dave
I can't answer your Question but just wanted to add that I have tried to get the local Time-Warner cable Co. to "fix" the digital out on my Pioneer box... to no avail. I PAY for the 40 digital music channels but no-one fron the local company can get the digital output turned on properly. The damn thing puts out a digital signal that through my D/A sounds like PHIiiiT.... PhIIIIIT..... PHIiiiit A constant stream of this noise. Stupid.
I wish I COULD also run the digital output into my D/A converter!
Are they terrified of "digital copying?"
It's nice to hear that there are others that are having this problem. Frankly I can't help but wonder if it has something to do with the smarts of the people these huge companies are able to hire and not train...thanks for your info.Ben
Well, here in NYC, I have RCN as my cable provider.
I called them and asked about their digital service (not avail yet in my area) and about the box. They told me that the outputs of the BOX would NOT be digital. They would be standard RCA. So the signal is digital up to the box, but gets converted to analog for display on the TV. Still, they told me that the picture quality would be night and day from the analog, which , in my opinion, stinks. especialy channel 2...horrid!!
