The Toshiba SD9200 (one of the best DVD players) is available for $1094 at store.yahoo.com/jvc-wholesale if you can go the extra $94. The Sony 9000ES may be slightly better in picture quality (though you will need an excellent TV/big-screen/projector to see it) and it has SACD capability, but you'll spend a few more bucks. Home Theater magazine has a review of the Toshiba this month and WidescreenReview did a review of the Sony in last month's issue.
Follow Ups:
I purchased a Pioneer Elite DV-C36 last week. It's a 5 disk DVD player with P-scan. It is "marvy"! I popped in Dinosaur and it looks great. Gladiator, which is my most problematic, was transformed! The unit sells for $500 at United Audio, IL (tweeter.outpost.com). I am playing it through my 55" mits HDTV Projection.
